What Happened Next…Training with a closed loop system and Qualified as a Registered Dietitian

I now have an Omnipod 5, the one that communicates with the dexcom. It has an activity setting and for 10 months I did not trust this. I still went to manual and reduced basal for rides and runs or turned off for short runs.

BUT TRUST IT!!! Once I became comfortable and used it correctly it works well.

First of all I had to get into the habit of setting on activity mode 2 hours before training ( or as close to that as I could remember)

If I do unplanned exercise I still use the activity mode….. depending on my blood glucose and the activity I may take 15g carbohydrate before I start.

Currently I only do short training sessions generally up to to 1 hour runs, 2 hours on the bike, 30 minute strength and up to1 hour surfing

I very rarely have hypos in the night now too. I think I just got into the habitat and accepted I had tight control during exercise and poor control outside exercise. DO NOT accept this like I did you can have great control all the time.

Now I am thinking of doing another Ironman in 2026. I will be 53 years old and hopefully now fully mastered the management of my diabetes whilst living the awesome life! It has only take me 25 years.

I will see how the activity mode works for more endurance.
